Monday Matinee - The Guernsey Literary & Potato Peel Pie Society (12A)

Join us for Stirchley Open Cinema's first Monday Matinee pilot on Monday 8 April in the cinema room screening THE GUERNSEY LITERARY AND POTATO PEEL PIE SOCIETY (CERTIFICATE 12A) (Link to trailer at bottom of post).

Lily James plays free-spirited journalist and writer Juliet Ashton, who forms a life-changing bond with the delightful and eccentric Guernsey Literary and Potato Peel Pie Society, during the aftermath of WWII.

“Don’t let the twee title put you off, as it’s a beguiling and affecting celebration of friendship, courage and the joys of reading, full of warmth and good humour.” The List

The cast includes some British actors including Tom Courtenay and Penelope Wilton.

This film is based on a book written by Cathryn McDowell. She writes..

“A correspondence begins between Juliet Ashton and members of The Guernsey Literary and Potato Peel Pie Society, with them sharing their experiences of Nazi Occupied Guernsey. When an idea for a book catches Juliet she goes to visit the island, making lifelong friends and taking life changing steps along the way. This book is told by way of letters and as the reader, you become enchanted by the writers of them and the love Juliet comes to feel for each of the Islanders; Dawsey, Amelia, Isola, Eben, Kit and Elizabeth. A beautiful story of love, friendship and the sadness of friends lost”.

Stirchley Open Cinema is being developed by a small group of people living in Stirchley and surrounding areas who believe that film is a great way to bring people together and build community. A Birmingham City Council Local Innovation Fund grant is helping us to get started.
